When Nike wanted to make yet another running shoe breakthrough, the Oregon based company went back to its roots and went to Japan for assistance. The Nike Rift running shoe is built from a high-tech carbon-based fiber manufactured by a Japanese company called Teijin. Teijin suggested a material used by automobile interiors. The Nike Rift prototype is inspired by an exceptionally springy indoor running track at Harvard. The prototype looked more like a medieval torture device called The Boot and performed much the same way. This Nike Rift prototype was used to find the optimal spring rate, but it clumsy and heavy metal frame did nothing to improve performance. Nike used the soles of the Nike Rift to save money on production of this shoe. Due to the mismatch of the upper to sole, this version has been in high demand to find. All of the retros in 1992 were leather, but Nike went back to its roots when it brought our the Nike Rift again in nylon versions in 1995. The Nike Rift has been released in more colors than any one collector has possessed. The Nike Rift is commonly used for limited releases such as for the opening of the store Atmos, Kid Robot, and there was a special one made for an Amsterdam only release.

The Nike Rift prototype is inspired by an exceptionally springy indoor running track at Harvard. The prototype looked more like a medieval torture device called The Boot and performed much the same way. This Nike Rift prototype was used to find the optimal spring rate, but it clumsy and heavy metal frame did nothing to improve performance. Based on the information extracted from its predecessor, the section prototype of the Nike Rift line was a scaled down, more stable shoe using a leaf shaped spring to provide the optimal spring of the first unit. Easier on the eyes with good cushioning, it lacked stability and durability. The third attempt at Rift produced a simpler, more attractive cushioning system utilizing a closed leaf shaped spring, but still disappointed in durability, comfort, and stability.

The Nike Rift feature a white leather upper with a quilted cross stitched pattern across the shoe. His inspiration, as you can tell from the detailed pictures, was a psychiatric ward. Also, the lace locks on the left shoe read Crazy while the ones on the right show read Smiles. Available now at End is this pair of Nike Rift which are part of their Vintage Spring 2009 Collection. They sport a blue upper constructed entirely from suede, along with the full vintage treatment which includes an oxidized midsole. The over-sized Nike swoosh along the side panels is a classic feature, and definitely help to solidify them as the definition of old skool. A few weeks ago, we posted news on the Nike Rift, which was inspired by the iconic video game console. Here we feature some detailed pictures of a pair of Nike Rift. They seem to be inspired by the D-Pad used on video game controllers, and in particular, strongly resemble that of the original Nintendo console .The D-Pad is still seen on video game consoles today, but back then, this was the only source of character movement in any video game, as analog sticks didn’t exist. The black portion at the base of the upper is the most unique feature, as the controller pattern can be spotted there. We were able to get our hands on a few pics of some new Nike Rift’s. They feature purple and orange upper constructed from a combinaton of suede and denim. The colors contrast well enough that they add to the beauty of the shoe. Another interesting feature is the illustration on he shoe’s inner sole. The Nike Rift project is definitely gaining popularity, and the latest collaboration is shown here in the form of this pair of Nike Rift. They were created by Hong Kong based artist Michael Lau, and feature an all white quilted design on the upper. No word yet as to their availability but we’ll update you guys once we are notified. A few weeks ago, we previewed some Nike Rift created specially for Pau Gasol that hit the House of Hoops in LA, and today, this pair of Away PE’s is slated to release at NYC’s House of Hoops. They feature a similar colorway that includes a predominantly black design along with lots of purple at the base of the upper as well as gold accents on the swoosh and tongue. The top of the tongue also says Pau Gasol, indicating the player they were specially created for. Nike’s latest collaboration was not with any known artist, designer, or brand, but instead with two die hard shoe collectors. Both were presented with their own custom Nike Rift, of which they have the only pair of. Kevin Hunter’s features a predominantly red colorway with white inner lining, and was inspired by his Bentley. We were fortunate enough to get some pictures of Nike Rift’s Spring 2009 collection. The Rift line does not compare to the Nike Rift line-up, but still they feature some really nice models and colorways. The Nike Rift is a timeless classic shoe, th Nike Rift model has transcended the skateboarding world, and is one of the most popular shoes worldwide. They were released to select Foot Locker House of Hoops but trying to get your hands on a pair now will require time, money, and eBay. Chicago’s House of Hoops is slated to release this pair of Nike Rift as one of three Player exclusives. They are scheduled to release today, November 14, 2008.
